As an embodiment of the energy that lives and resides within individuals classified as the lowest of us, phecelezi, abantu basemalokshini (township people), this EP represents not only the Second Coming of Kasi Soul as a storyteller in the music scene but the second coming of us as a people. The story is presented to you as a double entrende, which tells 1 story but in two tales, depending on which order you choose to consume it in.

Track 1: Land or War Faced with destitution & poverty that transcends generations along with a brutality metted out by a system that only serves and benefits a few, “Land or War (reprise)” represents a clarion call by a race of people hell bent on reclaiming their dignity. A cry by those who want to fight for the right to call their souls their own. It sets the scene for a story that begins with an ultimatum presented by the oppressed to their oppressor saying “If you do not give back our Land, War is what we will give you”.

Track 2: Journey to Exile Realising their short comings and lack of resources required for a people to make true their demands, the movement is left only but one choice, to take a “Journey to exile” in order to re-strategise, reform & seek aid from those that look like them. Filled with vigour, rage & a strong sense of optimism, the journey, culminates with a new home on borrowed land that allows for a brief intermission from the struggle, not in the slightest, hinting at what’s to come.

Track 3: Darkest Moment Like with any struggle, the permanency that silently tags along intermissions tends to sneak in unannounced making the taste and aroma of borrowed time sweeter. Forgetting the reason why this journey was undertaken, the movement experiences its “Darkest Moment” yet as the haves turn on the have not’s. As those with power graduate into oppressors themselves, the same poverty & destitution that inspired the movement now threatens to permanently erase all gains.

Track 4: San(kara) Shine Until of course, the movement experiences a “San(kara) Shine” that not only reminds them of the primary reasons why they chose to struggle instead of perpetual slavery but spurs them on to find that inner spark that sets the movement back on its course to reclaiming what is rightfully theirs, the right to self-rely & self-determine. Including an incept from an AU speech by the great Thomas Sankara where he tells the sitting commission “We can also use Africa’s immense latent resources to develop the continent, because our soil & subsoil is rich…….We have sufficient intellectual capacities to create technology & science or atleast to adopt it wherever we find it……Lets produce in Africa, transform in Africa, consume in Africa. Produce what we need and consume what we produce in place of importing it….” affirming these two important rights.
